Strategy

Set the strategic themes that objectives and initiatives are filed under, so work can be grouped and filtered by what it serves.

Strategic themes are the big goals your organisation’s work is in service of, such as growth or customer experience. Objectives and initiatives in Product Management are filed under a theme, so you can group and filter work by the goal it supports.

Themes are a way of organising work, not a planning method. The Strategy tab in Governance → Planning sets the list of themes.

Before you start

  • The Strategy tab appears only if your organisation uses Product Management. If you cannot see it, your organisation may not use it, or your role may not include it. See Understanding roles.
  • You need permission to change Governance settings to edit this page. Without it, you see View only — you don’t have permission to change these settings. and the controls are switched off.

Understanding the page

The Strategic themes list shows each theme with:

ItemWhat it is
NameWhat people see, such as Growth.
ColourViolet, Green, Orange, Turquoise, Magenta or Grey.
CodeThe theme’s fixed identity, shown greyed out.

A new workspace starts with four themes: Growth, Customer experience, Operational efficiency and Platform modernisation.

Changes save automatically. Saving… and then Saved appear beside the heading.

Why each theme has a code

A theme’s code is set from its name when the theme is first saved, and never changes after that. Objectives and initiatives are filed against the code, not the name. That is why you can rename a theme and it is relabelled everywhere without unfiling anything.

Add a theme

  1. Open Governance → Planning and select the Strategy tab.
  2. Select Add a strategic theme. A new row is added.
  3. Enter a name.
  4. Choose a colour.
  5. Click or tab out of the name field. The theme saves and its code is set.

Rename a theme or change its colour

  • Edit the name and click or tab out of the field. The code stays the same.
  • Choose a different colour from the colour list. The change saves straight away.

Remove a theme

  1. Select the bin icon (Remove) on the row.

Removing a theme doesn’t change the objectives or initiatives filed under it — they keep the stored value and show it plainly until they’re refiled.

What to expect

Themes appear wherever objectives and initiatives are filed, grouped or filtered, with the colour you chose.
