Sub-boards

Track unplanned work found during a stage on its own side board, without disrupting the work stream's main board.

Track unplanned work found during a stage on its own side board, without disrupting the work stream’s main board.

Work rarely goes exactly to plan. A bug turns up during testing, or a fix is needed that nobody planned for. A sub-board gives that unplanned work its own small board, branched off the stage where it was found.

A sub-board runs independently and doesn’t affect the work stream’s main pipeline. The stream can carry on through its stages while the sub-board’s tasks are worked on alongside.

Before you start

Open a work stream, select the Board tab, then select Sub-boards in the switch below the tabs.

Create a sub-board

Sub-boards are branched from a stage’s board.

  1. Open the Board tab and select the stage where the unplanned work turned up.
  2. Select the Board actions button (⋮).
  3. Select Branch sub-board.
  4. Enter a Name and, optionally, a Description of what surfaced.
  5. Select Create sub-board.

See Work stream board.

Understanding the list

Each sub-board has a header row. Select the header to show or hide its board.

PartWhat it shows
Name and statusThe sub-board’s name and its status, such as In progress or Complete.
Pending approvalThe sub-board is waiting for the project owner to approve it.

Approve a sub-board

When a sub-board is waiting for your approval, its header shows Approve sub-board.

  1. Select Approve sub-board.

The Pending approval label disappears.

Work on a sub-board

A sub-board uses the columns of the stage it branched from.

  • Drag cards across the columns. Column rules apply here too.
  • Select + on a column to add a task. Type a title and press Enter.
  • Select a card to open the task. See Working on a task.

Rename, complete or delete a sub-board

  1. Select the Sub-board actions button (⋮) on the sub-board’s header.
  2. Choose an action:
ActionWhat it does
RenameChange the sub-board’s Name and Description, then select Save.
Mark completeMark the sub-board as finished.
Delete linePermanently delete the sub-board and all of its tasks. Select Delete sub-board to confirm.

What to expect

If the work stream has no sub-boards, you see No sub-boards.

Active sub-boards also appear on the Pipeline tab, under the stage map, and on the project’s Work streams tab, marked with a bolt. See Pipeline and approvals and Project work streams.
