Evidence, impact and history
See what each draft is based on, which applications an item touches, earlier versions, and everything that has happened to the item.
When Next drafts an overview, a set of requirements or a PRD, it works from evidence: the ideas people submitted, your knowledge bases, the files in the item’s vault and the work of its agents. A portfolio item keeps a record of all of it. You can check the sources behind any section, see which of your applications each idea affects, go back to an earlier version of a draft, and read the item’s full history.
Use these tools to judge how far to trust a draft, to explain a decision to someone else, or to undo a change.
Before you start
- Open a portfolio item from Planning → Portfolio. See Portfolio item.
- Anyone who can open the item can read its sources, versions and activity.
- Only the item’s owner can restore a version. Changing an item’s applications depends on your permissions.

Sources for a whole step
When a step has been drafted, the action bar shows a link icon with a number: how many sources Next grounded the draft on.
- Select the link icon.
- Read the cited passages under Grounded on N sources. Select a long passage to expand it.
- To search and sort every source, select Search all N sources.
Sources for one section or requirement
- On the Overview and PRD steps, each section that Next drafted has its own link icon. Select it to see the sources for that section only.
- On the Requirements step, a card shows how many sources it is based on. Open the card to read them under Sources.
If a section or requirement has been edited since Next drafted it, the panel says Original draft. The sources grounded the original AI draft, not your edits.
Types of source
| Icon | Source |
|---|---|
| Inbox | A submission: one of the ideas behind the item. |
| Book | A knowledge base document, with its section and page where known. |
| Paperclip | A file from the item’s context vault. |
| Sparkle | The output of one of Next’s agents. |
Sources that were cited but have no preview are listed separately under Cited · no preview captured.
Search all sources
The Sources window lists every passage the draft drew on.
- A chain of chips at the top shows how the content was derived, for example from submissions into requirements, and from requirements into the PRD.
- Type in Search sources… to find a passage.
- Choose Relevance or Recency to change the order.
If nothing matches, it says No matching sources.
Gaps
Sometimes the agents cannot find something they need, such as a cost or a usage figure. When that happens, the action bar shows a gaps button with a count. Select it to see what is missing. Figures that depend on these are estimates, not measurements. Add the missing material as files under Configure, then regenerate the step.
See which applications an item touches
For items promoted from the Inbox, Next works out which of your applications each idea affects. It uses this when it writes the item’s documents, so correcting it improves later drafts.
- Open the item.
- Select Applications in the header. Select it again (Back to the item) to return.
The Applications view shows:
- A summary strip, This cluster touches, with each application and how many ideas affect it.
- One card per idea, with the applications it touches.
Read why an application was chosen
Select an application on an idea’s card to see:
- Why application: Next’s reasoning, or the reason a person gave.
- Based on: the documents the reasoning came from.
- What changes: the kinds of change involved, labelled Integration, Enhancement, Defect, Configuration or New application.
Correct the applications
- Add an application: select Add application… on an idea’s card, choose the application (or Other — type a name), then select Add.
- Remove an application: select the cross on its chip. It is removed from that idea only.
- Give a reason: for an application you added by hand, select Add reason or Edit reason, type why the idea touches it, then select Save.
Applications you added by hand are marked with a pencil. Applications the analysis found cannot be edited. If you disagree with one, remove it and add the right one.
Run the analysis again
The analysis starts automatically when an item is promoted. It takes a few minutes, and the view says Analysing… until it finishes.
To run it again, select Re-run analysis (or Run analysis if it has never run), then confirm.
When there is no application map
- An item raised directly into the Portfolio was not promoted from a cluster, so it has no application map and the Applications button does not appear.
- If the view says Applications are not stored in this workspace., your organisation does not use this feature.
Compare or restore an earlier version
Every time a step is drafted, edited, revised after review or restored, a new version is saved.
- Open the step.
- Select the version summary in the action bar, for example “Generated 2 hours ago”.
- Read the list under Version history. Each version shows who or what produced it and when:
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| AI · initial draft | Next’s first draft. |
| AI revision | A later draft by Next. |
| Reviewer revision | A change made from review feedback. |
| Edited | A person’s edit. |
| Restored | An earlier version brought back. |
- Select a version that Next drafted to see which agent packs produced it.
The current version is marked with a tick.
Restore a version
While a step is waiting for approval, the owner can restore an earlier version.
- Open Version history.
- Select Restore beside the version you want.
The restored version becomes a new version at the top of the list, so nothing is lost. A version marked Consumed has already been used by a later step and cannot be restored.
Read the item’s history
The Activity button in the header opens Activity & iterations: the item’s full history, newest first.
Each entry says who did what and when. Entries made by Next have a sparkle; entries made by people show their initials. Hover over a time to see the exact date. For example:
- promoted from 6 submissions
- generated the Overview with AI (5 sections)
- approved Overview — advanced to Requirements
- added requirement: title
- submitted PRD for review (4 reviewers)
- requested changes on section: section, with the reviewer’s comment quoted
- accepted a proposed change to section
- score updated 62 → 68 (+6)
- sent to delivery — intake item created
Use the All, Next and People buttons to filter the list.
Iterations
The header shows which Iteration (round of planning) the item is on. The list shows the current round first. Earlier rounds are collapsed behind Show earlier iterations, grouped under Iteration N.
If nothing has happened yet, the list says No activity yet.
