Project work streams
See every work stream delivering a project, with its stage, health, owner and due date, and start a new one.
A project is delivered through its work streams. Each stream is a strand of work with its own owner, dates and workflow, moving stage by stage towards done. The Work streams tab lists them all in one table so you can see, at a glance, where each one is and how it is going.
The table also shows the smaller pieces of work that hang off a stream: sub-work streams that run inside it, and sub-boards branched off for unplanned work.
Before you start
Open a project from the Projects page, then select the Work streams tab.
Understanding the table
Select a row to open that work stream’s board.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Work stream | The stream’s name. A branch icon marks a sub-work stream, and a bolt marks a sub-board, with the stage it branched off, for example off Build. |
| Stage | The stage the stream is on now. Sub-boards show their own status instead. A stream whose tasks are run in another system shows Managed in followed by the system’s name. |
| Health | On track, At risk, Blocked or Done. Sub-boards and externally managed streams show a dash. |
| Owner | The person accountable for the stream. A dash means nobody is set yet. |
| Due | The stream’s end date. A dash means it has no dates yet. |
Archived work streams are greyed out. Sub-board rows have a light amber background.
Icons beside a stream’s name
| Icon | What it means |
|---|---|
| Arrow pointing up and right | Opens the feature concept the stream came from. |
| Amber arrow with a number | Other work streams block this one. Select it to see which streams, and select one to open it. |
| Chevron on the left | The stream has sub-work streams or sub-boards. Select it to expand or collapse them. |
Find a work stream
- Search by name.
- Filter by Health: All, On track, At risk, Blocked or Done.
If nothing matches, you see No work streams match. Select Clear filters to reset the search, filter and grouping.
Change how the list is displayed
- Select the Display button in the toolbar.
- Choose how to Group by: None, Status or Owner.
- When the list is not grouped, choose whether Sub-streams start Expanded or Collapsed.
Start a new work stream
New work streams are set up in the Intake Queue before they join the project, so that every stream has an owner, dates, workflow and tasks before work begins.
- Select New work stream at the top right of the tab.
- Enter a Name.
- Enter a Description. This is optional.
- Select Continue in intake.
A new intake item is created for this project, and it opens for you. Set up its owner, dates, workflow and tasks, then promote it into the project. See Intake item and Setting up a work stream.
What to expect
If the project has no work streams yet, you see No work streams yet. Work streams arrive when intake items are promoted into the project. Select Open the intake queue to go to the Intake Queue.
Good to know
- A stream’s health colour is the same everywhere in a project: green for on track, amber for at risk, red for blocked, blue for done.
- To see the streams laid out over time, use the Timeline tab. See Project timeline and dependencies.
