Impact types
Set the impact labels a triager can assign to a cluster of ideas in the Inbox, each with its own colour.
When ideas arrive in the Inbox, Next groups similar ones into clusters. A triager then reviews each cluster and can label it with an impact type, such as whether the problem is blocking people or just causing friction. Impact types make it easy to filter the Inbox and spot the most serious problems first.
The Impact types tab in Governance → Planning sets the list of impact types your organisation uses.
Before you start
- You need permission to change Governance settings to edit this page. Without it, you see View only — you don’t have permission to change these settings. and the controls are switched off.
- If you cannot see this page, your organisation may not use it, or your role may not include it. See Understanding roles.
Understanding the page
The page is titled Impact Types. Each impact type has a colour swatch and a name. The colour is shown as a dot next to the type in the Inbox filter and on the cluster.
A new workspace starts with three impact types:
| Impact type | Standard colour |
|---|---|
| Blocking | Red |
| Friction | Amber |
| Enhancement | Green |
Changes save automatically. Saving… and then Saved appear beside the heading.
Add an impact type

- Select Add an impact type. A new row is added.
- Enter a name, such as Compliance risk.

Change a name or colour
- To rename a type, edit its name and click or tab out of the field.
- To change its colour, select the colour swatch and choose a new colour.
Remove an impact type
- Select the bin icon (Remove) on the row.
What to expect
- The impact types appear in the Inbox filter and in the impact choice on each cluster.
- Each type’s colour appears as a dot wherever the type is shown.
Good to know
Clusters store their impact type by its name. If you rename or remove a type, clusters already labelled with the old name are not relabelled. Agree names before triage begins, and add a new type rather than renaming one that is already in use.
